Replacing a coffee table with an ottoman changes what the center of the room can do. Feet have a comfortable landing, the seating group gains another textile, and a large hard surface becomes softer. The missing piece is often a stable place for drinks. Decide how that will work before assuming a tray solves every problem.
Choose the main job
If the ottoman will mainly support feet, place it at a comfortable distance from the most-used seat and compare its height with the seat cushion. If it will serve as extra seating, check that the product is intended for that use and that people can enter the group without stepping around it awkwardly.
Storage models add another question: can the lid open when the room is in its normal arrangement? A coffee-table tray that must be removed several times a day can make useful storage frustrating. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for hinges, lids, and safe use rather than treating all upholstered boxes as interchangeable.
Give drinks a reliable surface
A tray can organize a remote and a small display, but its stability depends on the upholstery beneath it. A deeply tufted or very soft top may not provide the firm support a drink needs. Side tables can be a more dependable solution, especially when several people use the room.
Keep the tray proportionate to the surface and avoid placing it where someone naturally puts their feet. If the whole ottoman must be covered with a rigid tray to serve daily life, a conventional coffee table plus a separate footstool may be the clearer arrangement.
Test the shape with the seats
Round ottomans work well within several angled seats, while a rectangular shape may relate to a long sofa. Neither shape automatically saves space. Tape the footprint and include the room needed to pass between it and the surrounding furniture.
An ottoman in the same fabric as the sofa can read as an extension of the seat. A different texture or color gives it a separate identity. In either case, consider cleaning and wear where feet will rest, and follow the product's care directions.
Before choosing a larger model, check whether you can move it when vacuuming or rearranging the room. The central piece should make the living room easier to use, not become a heavy obstacle that everyone works around.
