Curtains can occupy almost as much visible area as a wall. That makes a colored pair a major part of the room, even when the fabric looks pale on a small sample. Before ordering, consider how the panels will look closed as well as gathered at the sides of the window.
A soft blue, green, or clay color can give a plain room a clear direction. It does not require matching every cushion. The more useful question is whether the color belongs beside the fixed surfaces you already have: the floor, sofa, window trim, and wall paint.
View a generous sample upright
Hang the sample near the window at the time you use the room most. Fabric seen flat on a desk can look very different when light passes through it. Check both the face and the reverse if the curtains will be visible from outdoors or from an adjoining glass door.
Compare the sample with a white sheet of paper and with the wall. This makes a cool or warm undertone easier to notice. A blue-gray curtain beside a warm ivory wall might create a deliberate contrast; if you expected them to blend, the difference could be disappointing.
Decide whether the window should stand out
For a quieter effect, choose a curtain color close in lightness to the wall, even if the hue differs. For a more defined window, use a deeper color. Dark panels can frame a bright opening strongly, so consider whether that emphasis improves the room's proportions.
If a window is off-center, bold curtains will draw attention to that fact. You can still use them, but arrange the nearby furniture to make the asymmetry feel considered. Do not extend a rod beyond sensible support points just to create an illusion in a photograph.
Carry the color only a little farther
Repeat the curtain color in one smaller place, such as a ceramic bowl or a detail within a rug. Let the rest of the palette come from existing furniture. Too many exact matches can make the room feel assembled from a single display rather than gradually furnished.
Measure the installed hardware and intended finished length, and confirm whether the advertised width is per panel or per pair. Also check how much space the gathered fabric needs when open. A beautiful color is less enjoyable if the panels cover the light you wanted to keep or snag on a nearby chair every day.
